About Mechanical Engineering
As a mechanical engineer, you invent, design and implement new products and production processes. Also, you can think about how to make machines and production processes safer. A mechanical engineer knows everything about materials and how to use them in the best possible way. You use the latest scientific insights and practical applications in the field of technology and automation.

What are you going to learn?
We will train you to be a widely employable engineer. You will learn the theory and the practical skills that you need to design, make and maintain equipment, production processes and machines to make products. Many of your teachers have worked in that sector. You will train your technical skills and will carry out challenging (company) projects assignments. An important part of a mechanical engineer’s work consists of technical design. We will support you in that learning process.

Courses
The Mechanical Engineering course in Eindhoven works closely with companies in the Brainport Region. In addition, Fontys University of Applied Sciences has its own project office called ExPo. Together with students from other engineering courses, you’ll carry out projects from the business community. In Eindhoven, the Engineering programs have a brand-new location at the TU/e site with labs that are equipped in line with the latest developments.
Study at Fontys Engineering in 4 years!
What does your study time look like at Engineering?In year 1, your weeks consist of:
- 22 hours of class / theory
- 8 hours of projects
- 10 hours of self-study
In this propaedeutic year, you’ll focus on the broad field of a mechanical engineer. You’ll be taught in one of our innovative labs and classrooms.
You take courses such as energy and process technology, construction and mechanics, production technology, materials science, measurement and control technology, mathematics and physics. You’ll work on designing products in project groups right from the start.
In our lab classes, you practice technical skills such as machining, welding, CAD designing, 3D printing, and modelling and simulation.
In the third year, you follow an internship and a minor. Your internship is at a company that matches your interests. Also part of the third year is a free minor, which gives you the opportunity to deepen or broaden your knowledge.
Internship
During your internship, you’ll apply your knowledge and experience in a company of your choice, in the Netherlands or abroad. Think of large international tech companies, small innovative start-ups, production facilities or research departments; all options are open to you. You’ll receive supervision from both Fontys lecturers and your internship company supervisor.
Minor
The minor is an elective programme of 1 semester. You can choose for a broadening minor in any study field, either within Fontys or elsewhere in The Netherlands or abroad. You can also choose for an in-depth technical minor if you can’t get enough of Engineering! The minor will give your study programme its own identity and allow you to specialize.
Before graduation, you’ll choose a specialisation from one of three fields:
- Precision engineering: You’ll learn about advanced construction principles and the workings of precise mechanical moving and non-moving structures. You’ll gain knowledge about advanced construction mechanics and how design principles correlate to manufacturing.
- Energy and process engineering:You’ll focus on topics such as the transfer of heat, in which heat exchangers play a central role. You’ll work on industrial climate systems and look at possibilities for energy savings within industrial applications.
- Innovation engineering: A specialisation in the field of developing innovations for small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition to technological developments involving patents and technological trends, you’ll learn how to create a business plan for implementing your own innovation.
Graduation
In the last semester of your studies, you’ll start your graduation project. Again, you’ll work and study in a company in the field of Mechanical Engineering on a topic that sparks your interest. The assignments needs to be related to your specialisation semester. During this final semester, you’ll write your bachelor thesis.

Statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees
A distinction is made between statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees. Only if you satisfy all statutory requirements regarding your nationality and if you have not yet been awarded a degree, will you be eligible for statutory tuition fees. Via the tuition fees indicator, you can secure an indication of the type of tuition fees that will be applicable in your situation. To do so, please make use of the indicator above.
Distinctions are made between the following types of Institutional Tuition Fees:
- Low institutional tuition fees
- High institutional tuition fees

The amount to be paid may vary in accordance with the following situations:
- If you have enrolled in more than one course programme (at Fontys and/or elsewhere), it is possible that you may only be obliged to pay one set of statutory tuition fees.
- If you believe that you may be eligible to pay only the statutory tuition fees on the basis of information that may be unknown to us, please report this to your Course Department.
- If it later transpires that you do not meet the requirements for statutory tuition fees, you will be obliged to pay the (higher) institutional tuition fees and if this is the case, you will be notified accordingly.

Go to StudyinNLPaying in instalments
Collection will occur in a maximum of ten equal instalments on or around the 26th of the month. Depending upon the processing time required after your enrolment, the direct debit may need to be moved to the following month. If so, the amount outstanding will then be divided and added to the remaining instalments to be executed until and including the June instalment.
If paying the full sum in a single payment
If you commence your studies on 1 September, the direct debit pertaining to your Tuition Fees will be executed on or around 25 September. If you commence your studies after 1 September, the direct debit will be executed on or around the 26th of the month in which you commence your studies.
Non-EU students
Incoming non-EU students will receive a payment letter from their study department, which must be paid before the deadline. In the following academic years, payment can be made by direct debit.
Non-SEPA
If you have a Bank account number of which the bank is not situated in one of the SEPA countries, and you are a national of a country outside the EEA without an address in The Netherlands, then you will receive a payment letter from Fontys via your course department.
The Dutch currency unit is the Euro (i.e. abbreviated to ‘EUR’ or ‘€’).
The average living expenses per month for a foreign student living and studying in Holland are between EUR 1,100 and EUR 1,500 per month. These living expenses cover rent, insurance, food, public transportation, books, clothing and other general costs.
Dutch Immigration Service (IND) requires non-EEA students to proof they have access to € 14.641 per year (€ 7.320 per semester)
Costs within the first months upon arrival will be higher than all other months due to a housing deposit, intro week and books. Study books are usually bought at the start of the semester and therefore it is wise to reserve and have direct access to an amount at the start of the semester which can cover the price of all study books and the living expenses for the first two months.
Before starting your study at Fontys, you must find suitable housing. Unfortunately, it is not easy for international students to find accommodation in the Netherlands due to the housing crisis. Start your accommodation search early. Please be aware that finding a place to live is your own responsibility. However, we are happy to assist in any way we can.

With a Mechanical Engineering degree, you will have many opportunities in the future. As a mechanical engineer, you can work as a process engineer, project leader, system engineer, production engineer and much more at either engineering firms or research institutions.
- As a process engineer, you design industrial systems for the gas sector or food sector.
- As a sustainability project leader you devise technological solutions for reusing or storing energy.
- A systems engineer will use the latest technologies for designing smart robots.
- You might work as a technical buyer, working with the engineering team to ensure that projects will delivered on time.
- An R&D medical engineer designes medical scanners and other devices, like prostheses, or even designing 3D implants.
Of course, you can also continue studying and take a master's course at Fontys or a technical university. Fontys offers master's degrees in Digital Technology Engineering and in System Design.
Agreements have been made with Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) for a special programme, which makes it easy to move on to a master's programme at the TU/e.
